Biology honors project

DOCUMENTATION PROCESS:

Every Sunday I would go to each of the four locations (airport, balboa park, high tech mesa, windmill farms in del cerro) and document their:

* height (by measuring)

* width (measuring)

* how much the plant was flowering (visual observation)

* humidity (checking weather app in area)

* animal life (visual observation)

* pigment (visual observation + experiments (see below))

* pollution (visual + tactile observation)

* soil (visual + tactile observation)

EXPERIMENT PROCESSES (found in second document):

1.

Process:

This experiment involved rubbing the outside of a plant onto coffee filter paper, and then placing it into alcohol. The alcohol is supposed to carry the coloring from the line into the rest of the filter paper, and spread it out into a way that’s easier to see. I took leaves from each of the four plants with the hopes of comparing their results.

2.

Process:

For this experiment, the idea was to boil water with each of the plants in it, and compare the results. This one seemed a bit more straightforward, so I was excited to try it. I decided to only take leaves from one plant, and instead use a different type of plant to compare. I ended up using the arugula from my house because I knew it would be very clean and vibrant.

SEE BELOW for information collected through observations, and an analysis on each dataset.
